What to Wear on the Golf Course
Today there are a lot of options that a golfer has when it comes to proper golf attire. Of course this has not always been the case. There was a time in the not too distant past that the attire that a person wore to the golf course was mandated by socially acceptable customs or even, at times, by the rules of the game itself. While for the most part the highly restricted standards of the past are no longer imposed, there is still a particular "clothing culture" associated with golf that most players adhere to. Lets look at what is generally considered acceptable and proper golfing attire today.
Shirts most commonly take the form of polo style, but they can be found in cabana styles as well as broadcloth styles. These shirts are generally very form fitting and made of breathable fabric. Current trends favor solid colors in the primary or pastel family, or with conservative stripes. In the past golf shirts have been very loud and ostentatious in their designs, but not nearly as much as pants have in the past.
Golf pants of today are more conservative and much more comfortable for those wearing them than they were in the past. In prior generations golf pants were known for being very colorful and oversized. Most of the time these pants featured plaids, bright stripes, and heavy checkerboard patterns. Today golf pants are most commonly in the form of twill slacks, canvas khakis, or broadcloth pants. Gone are the flared thighs, tight crotches and mid-calf hems. Golf pants can be fitted in the pro shop of most golf courses in order to provide the most comfortable fit for the man wearing them. In regard to undergarments, most players choose to wear standard underwear while playing golf, many men choose to wear an athletic supporter while playing due to the strain that can be placed on the groin area during play. Women may choose to a sports bra for the same reasons.
Shoes are an essential part of any golfer's wardrobe. The shoes that a golfer chooses can have a major impact on the type of play that they can expect to have. There is a wide range of golf shoes on the market. A golfer can also have shoes custom made or can have ready-made shoes custom fitted in his local pro shop. The price that a golfer pays for his shoes can be considered an investment in his overall game. Shoes can range in price form a hundred dollars for a basic pair to several hundred for a top of the line pair. This should not be considered an outrageous amount, however as a good pair of golf shoes can last a player for many years.
Accessories include everything from special socks, custom fitted athletic supporters, joint braces, sunglasses, special golfing gloves, and more. There are an almost endless array of accessories that golfer can add to their wardrobe to help them enjoy their game more. Golf clothing is something that has evolved quite a bit over the years. Golf clothing can be purchased from a wide variety of retailers both online and in the real world. With all of the options that are available for golf clothing these days it should be easy for a golfer to build a wardrobe that looks great and feels good to play in.
